I gotcha friend. So, Tony and Loki have been dating for a while and things are going well. But after a while, Loki starts spending the night. They enjoy each other just like always, but in the mornings when he wakes up Tony's never there.
He always wakes up alone.
Loki worries, did he read the situation wrong? Does Tony not like him hanging around?
But Loki isn't one to sit around moping, he does what any self respecting resident of the tower does when there's a mystery.
He asks Jarvis."
And Jarvis tells him that Sir is in the shop. Always in the shop in the mornings.
Now, this Loki could have guessed. It's always where Tony goes when he has an idea.
So he asks Jarvis, "Well, how is he? Is he well?"
And Jarvis says, "Oh, yes, sir is 57% more productive after spending evenings with you, Prince Loki."
Armed with information, Loki goes to the lab. "Tony, I have a problem. And I do not want to alarm you, but it is really very important to me-"
"Hang on, hang on, just a sec. I'm just-"
Tony is half submerged in the open hood of one of his old cars.
"Tony," Loki sighs, becoming rather annoyed. "I'm trying to speak to you. Will you not give me the time of day?"
And right away Tony jerks up, grease smudged on his face and his eyes glimmering with inspiration.
"Shit, are you alright? Is everything okay?"
Loki's perplexed, does Tony want him around or not? Why does he send these mixed signals?
But then, he runs a hand through Loki's hair and chuckles. He teleported down so urgently he didn't even brush his hair or put on real clothes.
"I always get my best ideas after a good night's sleep." he confesses. "When I get up, I can't help myself. I just wander down here before I'm even awake. You've got a talent, you know? For inspiring brilliance." Tony laughs.
But why always when Loki's here? Just once it would be nice to see Tony curled up in bed and share a lazy morning. Perhaps even breakfast. Loki is an excellent cook, not that he's ever had a chance to show it off with Tony disappearing.
And then he recalls what Jarvis said. "Sir is 57% more productive on nights when you are here." Oh. Oh how silly.
Tony only sleeps when Loki is here.
Loki's heart swells up, he can't seem to make it stop. He is the monster under Asgardian beds, the man who threatened Earth for a cosmic bargain. He is no one's safety blanket, surely not.
But Tony is a man of science, and so Loki must understand him as a scientist would, with data. And the data all points to one simply conclusion. Tony feels safe with Loki, not only safe enough to sleep through the night and wake full of energy, but enough so that he sleeps better with Loki snuggled along his back.
No one has ever felt so in Loki's presence. Even his own brother regarded him with wariness, always waiting for Loki to spring some trap or reveal a practical joke.
But here, here he is family. Here he is a wanted protector against nightmares real and illusory. And in time, he finds he does not sleep well without Tony either.
And when Tony notices his sour mood, he starts sleeping with a tablet on his side table. He starts working from under the covers, because Loki being happy is more important than even the most intriguing of ideas. They will go down together once Loki is awake and the designs can complete themselves, once their bellies are full of Loki's food and their skin is flushed and clean from a shared shower. Together they can venture down and spend their hours finishing one another's sentences and chasing the fantastic dreams wherever they go. Together.

Loki makes many things but his best is a strawberry suspension cake that he perfected in secret for six months because Tony’s birthday was coming up and it was his favorite cake.
