Which then prompts me to ramble this at @NovaRain01. So might as well give it to you guys too
So scenario. Someone, lets say Sif (since it usually is with me) goes up to popular Tony in the middle of the school corridors and says “Did you know Loki has a crush on you?”

And Loki is like pale and horrified and furious and Tony barely glances at Loki before saying to Sif. “You know, maliciously spreading rumours to try and mortify someone is a pretty shitty thing to do. How would you like it if someone did that to you?”

And the hallway is silent and then suddenly people start whispering and glaring at Sif. The whole thing isturned on it’s head before Tony just shakes his head and walks away from her.

And Loki just feels so grateful for Tony doing that. It also makes his all consuming crush on the other boy grow even more.

It’s only later that day when Loki is by his locker and he hears a quiet 'Hey'. He turns and finds Tony beside him and his eyes bug-out. Tony just flashes him a charming smile before asking, “So, I don’t know if Sif was being serious or not, but I thought I’d ask anyway; do you wanna go out with me tomorrow night?”

And Loki just stares at him for a long time, his heart pounding, his stomach twisting, before saying, “You’re asking me out?”

“Yeah,” Tony agrees with a lopsided, adorable smile. “You interested?”

Loki hesitates for all of a moment before saying a smoothly and casually as possible. “I suppose that would be alright.”

Tony’s grin becomes a supernova and he excitedly exchanges phone numbers with Loki, promising to text him after class to better arrange a time and location for their date.

Loki can only stare after him once he walks away, feeling stupefied and maybe a little like he’s dreaming. He also turns back to his locker and uses the metal walls around him as a way of hiding the giant smile that is quickly taking over his face.

Loki and Tony on the same team (for w/e reason) and they win the world cup and Tony jumps into Loki's arms and kisses him, regardless of who sees.

Or, alternatively, Loki and Tony are on opposing teams, but Tony gets injured and while a lot of people rush over to him, Loki is one of the first, dropping to the ground and checking on him to make sure he's okay and Tony having to tell him to go and keep playing when Loki just wants to be with his lover/boyfriend (or friend, if you wanna go the pining angle XP

loki: [loud sobbing] how do you even get up in the morning?
tony: shh, i know, i know. it's gonna be okay.

Loki originally stole Tony's identity for some nefarious purpose. Maybe Tony's going on an actual vacation for once and thats why he's out of the picture for a while. Pepper is restricting his interactions with the outside world for a while when they're there bc the kid stresses way too much and he needs a break from all the media and you know, stress of life. so thats when Loki decides its time.

maybe his purpose is to try and ruin the relationships between the avengers. to split them up and make sure they aren't as close knit anymore, that they aren't the family they seem to be. except when he gets to the tower/compound, it isn't what he expected at all. he thought that Tony would be idolised and couldn't get the Avengers to leave him alone, but when he starts showing up to group events, people just look surprised. "Tony, I didn't think you'd show up," etc. and he's being constantly asked to look at upgrades, to do things around the tower/compound and whatnot despite the fact that Loki knows Tony provided all of this for them. (bc 'if I aim to impersonate someone as meaningful to the mortals as Stark, I would have to make sure I understand who he is, what he does' longwinded way of saying that he did his dang research yall) and he's actually?? kind of impressed that Tony's managed to survive so long with some of the stuff he's read. he feels secondhand irritability at the media and their reports and all that.

and every single day is the same. Tony, can you do this? Tony, can you stop doing that? Tony, I need you to do this. And it's so exhausting. He's just being constantly asked to do things and fix things and by the end of the day Loki is just ready to collapse. And his original plans may not have gone so well bc all of the Avengers don't really seem all that close to Stark anyway.

mAYBE Loki has to find some way to get Stark's memories, and needs to figure out how to do some of the techy stuff bc it wouldn't be very convincing if he was impersonating Tony Stark and couldn't very well change a lightbulb by himself let alone make upgrades to everyone's stuff.

but of course when he manages to obtain all this, he gets everything else too. So he practically adopts Tony's nightmare tendencies and his other issues and all that and it just makes everything harder. Tony figures out, because you know, how could he not? and he comes back all fired up. and by this point its been like, idk, two weeks maybe? and Loki's just sitting down on the couch in Tony's quarters and Tony comes in ready to STAB him or die trying but then he sees Loki's face and all of that anger just drains out of him. cue Loki questioning how he even gets up in the morning and Tony just sighs and says he doesn't really have much of a choice. Gotta keep keeping on, reindeer games.

after that, Loki disappears for a while, and Tony thinks he's somehow managed to scare off the villain once and for all, but he starts to show up randomly. Just out of the blue. Its only for a minute or two at a time at first, asks him what the mighty avengers have been up to, and then he starts staying longer and longer, just hovering over Tony's shoulder and he starts asking subtle questions about how Tony is doing. Tony specifically. It even gets to the point where Loki leaves like a gift or two in his workshop for him to find and Tony is like???? what??? is happening right now??

the others find out, and they eventually figure out that Loki isn't actually there to cause any harm anymore. They slowly get used to seeing him around the place every so often until he basically just lives there. and Tony is so much happier than he used to be because Loki is actually kind of? trying to make sure he's okay. He's never really had that to this extent before and its super nice

after a while more of them dancing around each other and lots of unresolved tension, the poor saps finally sleep together, and after that they're kind of in this tentative not-relationship for a while. but it just? works? which no one really expected.
cue eventual domestication that they don't even realise until its too late

Okay, but the first time Loki kisses him it's when Tony has been working too hard and Tony has legit collapsed unplanned and murmurs tiredly that Loki is comfiest and he may have been putting off sleep and Loki's heart melts and hours later when Tony wakes up and gives that sleepy smile and "hi" Loki just kisses him and Tony is a bit suprised and sleepy but just kisses back before cuddling even more into Loki because now his happy place is always going to be in grabbing distance and he's so happy about that.

I am listening to this. And totally seeing a highschool au, tbh.
She has a lovely voice, also.
But totally picturing Tony and Thor as friends first, then Tony and Loki became friends.
And then as the years passed Loki and Tony noticed each other and then they nervously kissed.
They hid it first 'cause it was scary and new. And then they hid it because they realised they had to.
Pretending they're just friends and brushing their hands together secretly when they're out before pulling away.
Tony dating a string of girls (but never doing anything) because it helps to hide them and is what Howard expects.
Loki dating no one and being a loner, which Odin doesn't blink at.
Sneaking off to be together sometimes. Other times planning to hang out "as friends" but it's never just friends.
Loki being sure it's hopeless and the one with silent tears. Tony with the hope of a better future when they can hold each other in public and kiss on the dancefloor. Tony always whispers against Loki's hair what their future will be like as they curl up together. Loki doesn't know if he believes it or thinks it's a foolish dream.
Tony goes to MIT to get his degree. Loki goes to Oxford maybe to get his. They keep in contact, phoning and writing letters, visiting each other whenever they can. Only going home so that they can visit each other and throw themselves into each other's arms and kiss for the first time in months.
And they talked about this for years, and when their degrees are done, they get an apartment together in a city where neither of their families live and then they finally get to be like that without a care of who sees and with nothing going to stop them.
It took them a while but they got their happy ending, it was never hopeless, just hard, and their refusal to give up has finally got them their happiness.

I just had this like, image and damn kinda wanna write it where, Loki and Tony are both super crazy in love with each other but pretending they aren't 'cause are sure the other doesn't like them.

Then, idk, maybe there is some big asgardian event where it's all about finding a courtship partner.

And Tony is a hot item and Loki can't bear standing around another room fearful of Tony finding someone. (Tony can't stand going to another event and being terrified someone will finally wake up to how awesome Loki is and snatch him up.)

They're both just TERRIFIED but hiding it under "ugh, this event sucks, I'm so not into anyone right now, ugggh" and then Tony, in a fit of stupidity suggests, "why don't we just go there as a courtship, save oursevles the hassle?"

AND THEN WE HAVE MUTUAL PINING ASGARDIAN FAKE DATE. Where they both are secretly adoring each touch and courting gesture and dreading the end of the week long event where they have to stop pretending and go back to never having the one they want.

They start apologising. And tbh, it could be Loki.
Loki never explained why the legendaries flocked around him, because it kept Tony interested.

But then he rambles it out how he's a bisaster genderfluid and is completely crushing on Tony and they notice and want to help and he's so sorry, omg so sorry, but Tony was right there and he couldn't think when he was that close to Tony and he kissed him and fuck he knows Tony isn't into him.
And Tony is like "heyheywait, who said I wasn't into you?"
And Loki takes a moment to comprehend that and then he does a ?? face but Tony is stepping close and taking Loki's hands and. "Not just the legendaries I was chasing. Been chasing you kind of exclusively for a while now."

And Loki goes "oh!" and then Tony kisses him and he kisses back and it's a soft kiss that makes them both weak in the knees. And then when they pull back they're grinning. Tony also smirks "You know, people always said I had a knack for catching the best pokemon. Now it seems I caught the best person-"
Loki shoves him away, making an irritated noise, Tony just laughs and steps right back in to kiss his blushing boyfriend's cheek.

either way, the whole incident throws their alignment out of whack and theyre no longer drift compatible. They cant pilot anymore

in the meantime, Tony has been practically growing up with the jaeger program, pretty much forced by Howard into helping with the development of new jaegers. the loss of one of their best pilot duos is a blow not only to the program but to Howards pride - he doubts anyone else can pilot his jaeger better than the brothers
whats worse, the kaiju are getting stronger faster than Howard can build better jaegers

hmm maybe he doesnt let Tony help then
this part is still flexible
though I was thinking that he needs the help
and with more and more jaeger pilots dying in battle, faith in the program is not what it used to be
there are less and less recruits willing to take up the mantle, and Howards struggling to get damaged jaegers repaired in time for their next battle let alone make new ones
it gets to the point where Howard and Maria go on to pilot again, maybe back in their old Mark 1
and things go to shit, because Maria ends up getting killed by a kaiju during their third drop but Howard survives
Howard loses his wife and his first jaeger has ben damaged beyond repair, but it just incenses Howard even more which predictably makes his relationship with his son hell

i feel like tony taking on howard's mantle after growing up in his shadow would be even more angsty if howard had died when tony was ~19-21, and ofc howard never rly let tony in on stuff but tony is smart and hes ten tkmes the man howard used to be, so despite being a kid he still manages to crank out even better jaeger than his dad ever has(edited)

but things go to shit again, because Howard dies this time during a kaiju fight
his luck had to run out sooner or later
so Tony is left alone in the cock pit, his barely functioning jager is the only one left standing, he just felt his father die through the neural link, and theres still a half-dead kaiju flailing around trying to finish the job
so what does he do
he fucking pilots the jager solo and takes it down
sure it takes him longer than he'd like and his body is shot to all hell but its dead now and thats what matters right
except he really is shot to all hell and his heart is fucked (I dont know how, but lets just say it is for now) and the evac team would take to long to get to him so he ends up scavenging parts from the jager to build an arc reactor to keep his heart going

the years go by, and kaiju get bigger but Tonys jaeger are better, more efficient because of arc reactor technology

Tony sure as hell isnt going to let this go down without a fight. Like sure, he grew up hating jaeger because of Howards obsession with them but now theyre his tech too and he made them better so they have to be enough to beat the kaiju
so he goes looking for pilots who are still alive and standing but have quit the program
and thats how he finds the asshole known as Loki
in the end, he gets two pairs; Steve and Bucky, Clint and Natasha
who have agreed to rejoin and are old partners so thats no problem
but he cant find anyone who can drift with Loki

and then it goes to shit anyway because Loki panics at the idea of sharing and Tony gets sucked into when he was dying
and Loki has to pull Tony out while panicking for them both (he can feel Tony dying) and its only later, when Tony's tired that he relises he picked up some of Loki's stuff, and has to relive the adoption moment
(and like they're exhauste , mental mainly, and end up collapsing together, maybe in a common room, after the bad first attempt)
After Tony deals with the emotional shit that Loki passed onto him he goes chased the guy down
he finds Loki trying to leave, like he just gave up (it was too much, he didn't understnad how Tony was still going, he couldn't even get past the adpotion stuff)
am I getting side tracked?

oooh thats super good! I love that! though I'd think the first attempt would go well, to establish that they are in fact drift compatible and for Loki to be intrigued enough to commit to rejoining the program since his condition was that he would join only if Tony could find him a partner
maybe this happens during their first real deployment, and all them bad memories come back

As an addition I imagine some sort of fic where on new years eve Loki offers a golden apple to Tony and it is a super soft fic with them promising to spend eternity together.

Yeah and maybe it's taken a few years for Tony to come to a decision and it has become tradition for Loki to ask each year but he totally respects Tony's decision kne way or any other. But this year Tony is ready and when he says yes Loki doesnt believe it at first but then just pulls his mortal in for a kiss and everything is happiness and joy

I feel like it’s a trickster/challenging the gods thing: they bragged about it being unsinkable so their gambit was put to the test, and in the game of chicken they lost, they couldn’t hold their claims/bluffs. And so they paid the price
They sunk
But imagine in a frostiron context
Tony made the calculations, he might even have been the one to find that out
And he lives by that creed
Run before you walk and all that

But anyway, it’s a talking to the gods thing, you’re held to your word, your convictions
And Loki is the shithead that takes that the most seriously
And so tony makes some outrageous claims and they get mysteriously put to the test (in life threatening ridiculously absurd ways)
And tony holds to his bluff

And prevails again and again
Of course, such publicity is awesome, and people think he did it on purpose to stir the pot and you know, like a weird mix of reality tv and putting weird stuff in a blender to see which one breaks first?
But tony knows something is afoot, not something he can explain (i mean there’s statistically improbable and there’s finding yourself in tex avery situations every other week
He ends up figuring it out sorta (and if he calls it the “king of the world effect” no one has to know) and if he sends a wave and a wink to the invisible god checking on his claims, well he’s Tony Stark
And they have a system, it’s working for years, routine almost. Tony gets a weird reputation, but what else is new? He looks forward to their little standoffs, and it’s also a point of pride that he never does any false advertising
Until the day there’s tampering
(No need to send tony to afganistan to off him, he’s taking such ridiculous risks all the time, it was only expected at this point
Except loki doesn’t like outside interference with his games, at all
Cue protective vengeful god loki rescuing tony and giving Obie a taste of his own medicine

After that meeting, their relationship changes, they actually see each other, talk
Tony still ends up being in ridiculous high risk situations in order to prove he’s not bullshitting
(Tony learns to guard his words, just because he Would walk over fire for loki does Not mean he actually wants to try)
Still, most of their relationship is a bunch of dares , Tony saying outrageous things and Loki holding him to it
(Pepper takes that as proof that tony can never learn. She doesn’t understand that it’s their weird version of foreplay
Because tony throws challenges at the feet of his god and his god says prove it and he does
Because loki, the god of lies, the god who sees lies everywhere, who is lied to and lied about, trust that tony only ever speaks the truth (to him) and will always hold to his side of the bargain
Because tony trusts that the danger that his god puts him in is only proportional to his claims and he is in fact safe
And god have mercy on anyone interrupting or trying to meddle with their games
(Spoiler: he doesn’t. He’s very very pissed. More so if it’s ever putting tony in actual danger)

Anyways, he and Tony have been in a relationship for a long while now thanks to the golden apple but Loki starts having these moments, where he just... doesn't know who Tony is. Or confuses him with someone from the staff, and orders him to bring him a drink. Books. Parchment.
And then there are moments of clarity again and he knows who Anthony is and spends every moment with him, scared of the possibility that he may forget him fully at some point in the future.
